Former Liverpool goalkeeper Adrian San Miguel has recently opened up about his decision to leave Anfield, revealing that Jurgen Klopp's departure played a significant role in his choice to reject a new contract with the club.
With Klopp set to leave at the end of the season, Liverpool's goalkeeping department has undergone substantial changes. Adrian has signed with Real Betis, while other key figures like John Achterberg and his assistant, Jack Robinson, have also departed. Achterberg, who recently made headlines, suggested that had Claudio Taffarel not stayed on as a coach, Liverpool might have faced challenges in keeping their star goalkeeper, Alisson Becker. Additionally, Caoimhin Kelleher has previously hinted at the possibility of seeking a move for more regular playing time.
In an interview with Cadena SER, Adrian discussed his departure from Liverpool and the impact Klopp's exit had on his decision. "Erasmus has gotten out of hand! It’s usually a year and not 11 seasons," Adrian reflected. "What 11 seasons? I’ve lived very beautiful and special moments at West Ham and Liverpool. I’ve grown both as a person and a footballer."
Adrian, who has always had a connection to Betis, explained that his desire to return to the Spanish club became more pronounced as the season progressed. "I had to leave, but I never really left there," he said. "It is true that the option became stronger at the end of the season when we started talking more seriously. Liverpool offered me to extend the contract, and that’s where the dilemma started. I was very attracted to Betis. It was the best option for me and for my sporting career."
Adrian's departure marks a significant shift in Liverpool's goalkeeping setup and raises questions about the club's future plans, especially as they navigate a transition period with Klopp's impending exit.
