Depth has been a big part of the identity for the Minnesota Vikings, and it's really starting to pay off. Under head coach Kevin O'Connell, the Vikings haven't had too much success this preseason, but it is a little different this summer. Off losing in their first two preseasons under O'Connell, the Vikings moved to 2-0 after a solid 27-12 win over the Cleveland Browns Saturday.
While preseason wins may not amount to much in the bigger picture, they at least serve as an excellent indicator regarding how some players are faring well at camp, especially those scraping for roster spots. With that said, here are those whose stock is either rising or falling after the latest preseason matchup.
Rising: Lewis Cine
Lewis Cine was all over the field against the Browns, showing the kind of playmaking ability that the Vikings have been hoping to see. The young safety was flying around, making some big tackles and really flashing his potential as a versatile defensive weapon. His performance could prove to be a really good omen for a secondary that will need depth as the regular season nears.
This was where Cine made his most positive impressions; the prospects' ability to read plays quickly and close in on ball carriers were on full display. Right now, his stock is most definitely rising with the case he is making for a much larger role in this year's defense.
Other Risers
- Ty Chandler (RB): Chandler is clearly doing very well from the position in the backfield, for all that work has come with his speed and elusiveness. His value to the running game and special teams is coming through loud and clear as the Vikings sort out depth at running back.
- Jalen Nailor (WR): Nailor had a big day with some really nice catches that backed up his truly great work with the quarterbacks. He seemed to be getting open for plays downfield, which is a necessity moving forward for the Vikings, all of this being done with the real depth chart at wide receiver still somewhat in flux.
- Troy Dye (LB): Dye was a force on 'D', notching several tackles and flexing his ability as a special teams contributor. Where the Vikings are searching for reliable linebacker depth, that is a good, encouraging sign from Dye's performance.
Falling: Kellen Mond
Kellen Mond has had a rough preseason, and it continued with the game against the Browns. He was very inconsistent, missing throws, and really could not move the offense. With veteran signal callers in front of him on the depth chart, Mond needs to show more progress if he wants to secure his spot on the roster.
Conclusion
The 27-12 win for the Vikings over the Browns wasn't just a preseason win, as it showed off team depth and development of key players like Lewis Cine. Much will depend on those developing players and their performances through the remainder of the preseason in final roster decisions. Although some are trending upward, others, like Kellen Mond, are really going to have to step up if he wants to be part of the team's future plans.
Now, the Vikings will look to ride that momentum into the regular season, where depth and player development will be the keys to success.
