Don't Blame Penn State QB Beau Pribula for Entering the Transfer Portal Before the CFP

Penn State versatile backup quarterback Beau Pribula made the hard choice to enter the transfer portal, just days before the Nittany Lions' first-round College Football Playoff matchup with SMU. A move that has sent a mixture of reactions among fans: from support to frustration. But while it's easy to feel disappointed by his departure, Pribula's choice is one that reflects the realities of modern college football—and he shouldn't be blamed for prioritizing his future.

The "Impossible Decision"

Pribula called the decision "impossible," and it's easy to understand why. On one hand, he'd remain with Penn State through the CFP, continuing to be a member of the team in quest of a championship in the inaugural 12-team playoff format. On the other hand, hitting the transfer portal now means he'll be able to explore other options before the rosters fill up-the best way for him to secure a starting role elsewhere.

For any player in Pribula's position, it's a no-win situation. Opting to stay could mean sacrificing his long-term development and career trajectory. Leaving now, however, comes with inevitable criticism from fans and the media.

More Than Just a Backup

Pribula wasn’t your average backup quarterback. He was an integral part of Penn State’s offensive game plan this season, logging 187 offensive snaps and rushing for 242 yards and five touchdowns. Offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki used Pribula in a unique "change-of-pace" role, leveraging his versatility to keep defenses off balance.

Fans had every reason to salivate at the thought of the "Pribula package" in playoff action. His ability to add a dynamic, multifaceted element to the offense gave the Nittany Lions an edge. But to lose him in preparation for a high-stakes matchup against SMU is most definitely a blow to the squad.

A System That Forces Tough Choices

If there is anyone to blame for Pribula's decision, it's not the quarterback himself-the system. The way the transfer portal and the whole NCAA calendar are set up puts the players in a tight spot. The transfer portal opens before bowl games and the CFP, which puts players in a very precarious situation: stay with their current teams to play in the postseason or get an early start in finding a new opportunity.

For Pribula, waiting until after the playoff could have meant losing out on prime transfer opportunities. Programs in need of a quarterback would likely move quickly to secure commitments, leaving fewer options for players who wait. This system creates a conflict between a player's loyalty to their current team and their need to do what's best for their career.

A Balanced Reaction

Many Penn State fans have taken Pribula's departure in stride, wishing him the best as he heads off into a new chapter of his football journey. Others have expressed frustration, even going so far as to question why he couldn't have stuck it out for the playoff run. Pribula's decision to disable comments on his social media announcement speaks volumes about the scrutiny and backlash athletes face when making such personal choices.

But it’s important to remember that Pribula’s decision wasn’t about abandoning his teammates or turning his back on the program. It was about seizing the opportunity to grow and reach his full potential as a quarterback.

Looking Ahead

The Nittany Lions now have to forge ahead without Pribula. Offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki will need to adjust his game plan for the SMU matchup, removing the unique wrinkles Pribula brought into the offense. While the Nittany Lions are still a formidable team, his absence will no doubt be felt.

The future is bright for Pribula. He'll find a program that fits his skills and where he can actually compete for a starting role. Meanwhile, as college football keeps changing, it shows why his decision is another reason to look closer at how the timing of the transfer portal works for both players and programs.

But, in the end, he did what he felt best about for his future. And instead of grumbling about his decision, fans should be grateful he was such a huge reason Penn State was able to experience such an exciting season, then send him off and away into his next chapter. College football is just as about the journey as it is the destination-and the road has just begun for Beau Pribula.
