Marcus Rashford's Transfer
In what has been a turbulent Premier League season, Manchester United's troubles are coming at significant consequences as the results translate to changes in the transfer market as well. Indeed, a number of its star players have seen drastic drops in transfer value-evidence of the team's dire performance under Portuguese manager Ruben Amorim.
The Decline of Marcus Rashford's Market Value
From being touted as an important cog in United's attack, Marcus Rashford has seen his transfer value take a nose dive. At his peak, the England international was valued at £70 million, with some suggesting he could command even higher fees in a transfer deal. However, as things stand, his market value has nosedived to £45 million - a whopping £25 million drop.
The 25-year-old has struggled for fit in Amorim's system, not having featured since December 12th. His £300,000-a-week wages further complicate things for any suitor.
A Struggling Squad Under Amorim
It has been anything but plain sailing for Ruben Amorim at Old Trafford. The current form is far from what United used to enjoy, having lost three on the trot in all competitions. The most disheartening ones have been the last couple of Premier League matches, wherein they lost 3-0 to Bournemouth and 2-0 to Wolves.
These defeats have revealed the weaknesses of attack in Amorim's team, and five goals conceded showed the weaknesses in defense. Far from real contenders for the title, the 13-time champions of the Premier League now look very pale.
Significant Losses in Major Transfer Value Among Star Players
Rashford is not the only United player whose market value has plunged. A number of others suffered sharp declines:
- Rasmus Højlund: Picked up for £72 million, the market value of the Danish striker is just shy of £50 million—a whopping £22 million drop.
- Bruno Fernandes: The skipper has shed £8 million in market value and currently has a market value of £45 million.
One would say that this news must raise an eyebrow or two, especially for a club who may need to move players on to fund squad improvements in the next transfer window.
Bright Spots in a Dark Season
In amongst the gloom, there have been a few who have impressed under Amorim's management. Amad Diallo has probably been the star turn, with his late winner at the Etihad Stadium against Manchester City one of the rare highs of the season. That form has seen his value increase by £2.5 million.
He has been supported on the right wing by Moroccan international Noussair Mazraoui, whose dual role as a defensive anchor and attacking outlet has seen his market value increase by £1.5 million. These two players offer hope for United fans amidst the turmoil.
The Bigger Picture
Despite these individual instances of success, the general scenario remains gloomy. Even headliners like Matthijs de Ligt, Joshua Zirkzee, and Mason Mount have equally witnessed their values plummet. This presents the challenge for Amorim in trying to get back results on the pitch by reinstating the value of his star-studded squad along with their lost confidence.
With the January transfer window looming, Manchester United is facing a brutal reality-check: the financial ramifications of poor performance may hinder rebuilding. For a club of United's stature, a resurgence isn't just wanted-it's needed.
