Denmark boss Brian Riemer has warned Patrick Dorgu that great things are expected of him following his high-profile transfer to Manchester United.
The 20-year-old defender completed a five-and-a-half-year deal with United after joining from Italian club Lecce. He arrived in Manchester over the weekend, underwent a medical on Saturday, and finalized the transfer on Sunday.
United had been actively looking for a left-sided wing-back ahead of the January transfer window, and found the perfect mold in Dorgu for Ruben Amorim's 3-4-2-1 system. His rapid development in Italy, added to his pace and athleticism, has placed him as a leading contender to become United's first-choice left wing-back.
Denmark Boss Warns Dorgu About Pressure at United
The move to Old Trafford is considered to be a huge step in his career, yet Denmark manager Riemer believes the young defender needs to face an altogether different level of scrutiny and responsibility.
Speaking with Tipsbladet, Riemer said:
It is a huge endorsement of Danish talent development that two of our biggest talents, Rasmus Hojlund and Patrick Dorgu, now form part of one of the world's largest clubs."
But he has also pointed to the growing demands with a club of Manchester United's standing:
Patrick needs to know that from Lecce to Manchester United, the level of expectation and pressure will be totally different. He has spoken at great length with his close network about the transition.
But if he manages to succeed, the rewards are going to be huge because it is the most gigantic stage for him. It is a fantastic opportunity to have taken a great leap in his career, and now it depends on him only."
Dorgu's International Career and Upcoming Fixtures
Dorgu made his senior debut for Denmark last September, and has gone on to win one cap. He played as a substitute in a 2-1 Nations League defeat against Spain.
Under Riemer, Denmark will play against Portugal twice in a Nations League quarter-final doubleheader this coming March. To date, Dorgu has started only one senior international, but his move to United may increase his chances of securing a more prominent role in the national team.
With a very important period lying ahead, many football lovers' attention will shift to Dorgu for his adaptation to Manchester United and ability to rise to expectations.
