Manchester United will let one of their biggest stars leave the door at a big loss in this summer transfer window as new manager Ruben Amorim starts to reshape the roster to his taste.
Man Utd's Transfer Strategy Under Amorim
The January transfer window was a busy one for Manchester United, with much of the focus on the outgoing players as the club looked to trim its wage bill and squad size. Currently sitting 13th in the table, the Red Devils saw multiple first-team stars depart on loan in a bid to free up funds.
One of the biggest departures was Marcus Rashford, who joined Aston Villa for the remainder of the season. The Midlands club agreed to cover 75% of Rashford's wages, with that figure potentially increasing to 90% based on performances. Villa also hold an option to buy the England international for £40m if he impresses.
Similarly, Anthony's underwhelming spell at Old Trafford had a temporary ending as he secured a loan transfer to Real Betis. The Spanish side reportedly paid as much as 84% of his wages, easing off the financial burden off United.
Such modesty opened the door for Manchester United to sign Patrick Dorgu from Lecce in a deal worth £25m, with the potential to rise to £30m. That, in turn, allowed Tyrell Malacia to leave on loan as the first of what is expected to be a number of exits as Amorim begins to reshape his squad.
While the arrival of Danish defender Dorgu signals the start of a rebuilding phase, Amorim is far from done. The club is also reportedly eyeing a summer move for his former protege, Geovany Quenda, with further exits necessary to fund new signings.
And according to TEAMtalk, one of the biggest casualties of those plans is likely to be Rasmus Hojlund. The Danish striker joined from Atalanta for £72m - including add-ons - after being touted as one of the most exciting young forwards in Europe.
However, with Amorim seemingly unconvinced by his ability to lead the line, United are now prepared to offload Hojlund at a major loss - one that could top £30m.
With Amorim in charge, Manchester United will look to do things differently on and off the pitch. The transfer dealings in and out this summer are going to be highly essential to setting up the squad for the future.
