Manchester United legend and Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville has described a sinister experience he faced when Liverpool lifted the Premier League title. The former defender recounted that he got intense verbal insults from Liverpool fans as he walked out of Anfield, making him "snap" and added that it continued to torment him on the return journey home.
Liverpool Win Title in Style
Arne Slot's Liverpool squad scored a stunning 5-1 victory against Tottenham at Anfield on Sunday to win their second Premier League trophy after dominating a season that they lost only two matches in. There was revelry within and outside the stadium as people cheered over the team's victory.
Neville: "It Was Getting a Bit Fruity"
Despite the historic moment for Liverpool, a tense mood was reported by Gary Neville from where he was in the commentary gantry. Appearing on the It's Called Soccer podcast, Neville explained why he made an early exit from the stadium after the final whistle.
"When the game is finishing, I would do a podcast, but I did during the game part of the way through—it was getting a bit fruity where I was," said Neville.
"The security guard was with me. I got my backpack literally at the last whistle. Peter [Drury] has a habit of rolling to me as a rule, but they had it arranged I wouldn't have to speak this time."
Mayhem and Abuses Outside Anfield
Neville and his team departed the stadium in haste in the hope of beating the crowd. But what awaited him outside was unexpected mayhem.
"We ran for it and got into the concourse in front of the crowd. But outside, I did not anticipate the chaos," he explained.
"I was totally mauled, and I lost my head. There were obviously loads of them. They were having a good time, but when they caught sight of me, yeah—they let rip."
M60 Incident: "I Snapped"
The experience did not stop at the ground. Neville discussed how the abuse carried on even on his journey home, culminating in a spine-tingling experience on the M60 motorway.
"A guy on the M60 coming home. I've never been confrontational in my life, but if I'd have been able to get over. yeah, it wasn't a great last half hour," he confessed. "It was a bit old school."
