Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has indicated that there is a very serious summer of signings planned as the Reds get ready to strengthen their team during the upcoming transfer window. As the side remain just six points off claiming a 20th Premier League title — level with Manchester United's record — Van Dijk believes the time is now to put together a squad that can dominate for a generation.
The Dutch defender sealed a dramatic 2-1 win over West Ham at Anfield with an 89th-minute header, his 100th game as Liverpool captain. The victory left Liverpool in touching distance of Premier League glory under new manager Arne Slot.
Even as Van Dijk will sign a fresh two-year deal in the immediate future, with Mohamed Salah also having signed on recently, he emphasized that Liverpool cannot keep its feet off the ground — with Manchester City and Arsenal lined up to splash millions this summer.
I think Liverpool should be fighting for titles the next couple of years," Van Dijk stated. "Whatever happens in terms of players going out and coming in, I think it has to be a big summer. From where I'm standing, they're trying to plan on that — so we all have to have confidence in the board and get the moves right."
So far, Federico Chiesa has been the sole big signing since Slot arrived, but the Italian winger has yet to deliver on promises rather than performances. Van Dijk stressed the importance of plugging holes in every department — defense, midfield, and attack — to remain competitive in all departments.
