Timo Werner admitted that he made the correct choice in turning down Liverpool for Chelsea since lifting the Champions League with the Blues made him feel vindicated. The Germany striker, who had earlier played on loan at Tottenham Hotspur, quit RB Leipzig for Chelsea in a £47.5million switch in 2020, despite having strong interest from Jurgen Klopp and the then-Premier League title winners.
Klopp was said to be looking to strengthen his attacking force by signing Werner to partner Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino, and Sadio Mane up front. But the 29-year-old chose to move to Chelsea to reunite with fellow countryman Thomas Tuchel at Stamford Bridge, where he went on to win three big honors, including the 2021 Champions League trophy.
While his Chelsea career was marked by unsteady performances—scoring just 23 times in 89 games—Werner has no complaint, especially given his European success.
Reflecting on his spell at Chelsea, Werner said, "I could've signed for Liverpool, and they were a massive option, but I ended up signing for Chelsea and won the Champions League. It was not the worst decision."
Despite failing to replicate his Bundesliga form, the forward's Champions League win is a highlight of his career that indicates the move to Stamford Bridge was the right one.
