Manchester City defender John Stones could be heading to Barcelona on a free transfer next summer, with reports suggesting the Catalan club are leading the race for the England international's signature.
Stones, 31, has been a cornerstone of Pep Guardiola’s defensive setup since joining City from Everton in 2016. However, with his contract set to expire in June 2026, the centre-back is yet to agree on an extension at the Etihad.
Barcelona’s interest comes as no surprise. The La Liga giants are rebuilding under Hansi Flick and are in desperate need of experienced defensive reinforcement. Stones’ ability to play out from the back, combined with his leadership and Premier League pedigree, makes him an ideal fit for the Blaugrana’s project.
City, meanwhile, are reluctant to lose one of their most reliable defenders without a fee. Guardiola has publicly praised Stones’ importance, but financial fair play constraints and the emergence of younger talents like Rico Lewis and Josko Gvardiol could force the club’s hand.
Sources close to the player indicate that while Stones remains committed to City this season, he is open to a new challenge abroad — particularly in a top European league like La Liga.

If no new deal is agreed, Stones will be free to negotiate with foreign clubs from January 1, 2026. Barcelona are reportedly preparing a lucrative pre-contract offer to secure his services ahead of rivals.
