Manchester United Confirm £25m January Signing of Patrick Dorgu as Fabrizio Romano Reveals Key Factor Behind the Deal

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has revealed one of the main reasons why Manchester United signed Patrick Dorgu from Lecce in the January transfer window. Dorgu, a left wing-back, was the only major signing for the Red Devils in the winter window, with the club investing around £25 million, including add-ons, to secure his services from Serie A side Lecce.

It's obvious that United's priority back in January was to strengthen their left wing-back position. The club did not have an obvious natural fit for manager Ruben Amorim's favored 3-4-3 set-up. With both Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia out through injury, Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui were used in various positions-out of place in the left wing-back position under Amorim.

Despite links to a number of high-profile targets, including Bayern Munich's Alphonso Davies and Benfica's Alvaro Carreras, United chose to make 20-year-old Dorgu their number one target.

Dorgu should therefore be expected to hit the ground running to seal a place in the starting XI, then go ahead to feature in lots of matches for the rest of the season. His presence is expected to balance the squad in its surge for honors in the second half of the campaign.

Having made 57 appearances for Lecce, Dorgu scored five goals and registered two assists. The versatile defender can also be utilized on the right flank, with the different roles he has taken up this season.

Romano also announced that Dorgu will make £40,000 weekly at Manchester United, though his salary increases as his deal goes on. The primary motivation for United's January transfer move for the center-half, however, is knowledge of Napoli and Juventus interests in the defender, as Romano said both clubs were gearing up to make summer transfer window moves for Dorgu.

In other words, United signed Dorgu at the right time to secure their options in defense while fending off competition from other top clubs. The arrival of this young defender signifies that this is a strategic one targeting depth in teams that hope to contend for a trophy this season.
